London Restaurants

London's restaurant scene is booming and has grown less English and more international. It's becoming easier to find a cafe au lait and a croissant than a scone and a cup of tea. It offers variety of authentic cuisines, atmospheres and souls. There are establishments to suit every taste and pocket, from burger restaurants to those serving exquisite modern cuisine. But if you want to experience real London go to the pub. London has literally thousands to choose from. They can be trendy, shabby, very old, friendly or quiet. Some have bands, some are silent, some have canned music. You can sample a pint of British beer, enjoy good-value bar meals and the friendly atmosphere.

The Grenadier
The Grenadier is really a pub but it also has a small, romantic restaurant. In a superb ambience, it produces traditional British dishes with very decent sized portions at rather higher than normal pub prices, but then you are in the middle of Belgravia and the setting alone is worth paying for. The simple and straightforward menu most appropriately includes Beef Wellington - Fillet Steak topped with pate and mushrooms and wrapped in pastry. Starters range from Potted Whitby Shrimps, through to the more esoteric Black Pudding, whilst their puddings encompass many old English favorites, like Spotted Dick, Bread and Butter and Apple Pie. The Grenadier is magical, a terrific place to get blasted and fall in love.

Mr.Chow
Designer, painter, actor, restaurateur and collector - Michael Chow wanted to bring something beautiful of his homeland to the West. He opened Mr. Chow on Valentine's Day 1968, with authentic Beijing cuisine and an Italian front staff, emulating the British philosophy of "divide and rule". The Knightsbridge venture was the first designer restaurant and, since then, has led and influenced restaurants everywhere. Mr. Chow was an immediate success and established a template for a sequence of Mr. Chow which were to span the globe.

The Fifth Floor
In October 1991, Mr. Dickson Poon of Dickson Concepts, based in Hong Kong, purchased Harvey Nichols. His vision was to dramatically upgrade the profile and profitability of the store. An integral part of this vision was the development of the "state of art" Foodmarket, together with the high profile Restaurant, Bar and Cafe situated on the Fifth Floor. 10 years later Fifth Floor Restaurant & Bar has undergone a complete re-design. The new Fifth Floor Restaurant has been designed to evoke a modern and yet intimate design, which becomes particularly clear at night. Customers can relax in "Brno chairs" and bask in wonderful lighting effects created by intelligent lighting systems found in the ceiling and side walls. Distinguish menu includes Curry spiced loin of lamb finished with roasting juices and watermelon, Roasted squab pigeon, Tempura of Whitby cod with pea puree.

Zuma
Zuma's design could be described as opulent minimalism - glass, steel, teak and over a hundred tons of granite. This style suits the cuisine perfectly and, unlike some venues, means that a meal there ceases to be simply that and becomes an experience. Simple dishes such as Hourensou no goma ae (steamed spinach with sesame sauce) and kinko salad (mushroom salad with butter ponzu jalapeno dressing) are bursting with flavor, immaculately presented and moreish enough to give the suspicion that they were heavily laden with high-grade narcotics. Try also cocktails at the bar, they are superb.

The Boxwood Cafe
When Gordon Ramsay cooks, it's always something special. And when Gordon Ramsay opens a cafe, it's truly spectacular. The Boxwood Cafe, set in one of Knightsbridge's swankiest hotels, is smart, welcoming, sophisticated and delicious. The interior is designed by Barbara Barry and is an ode the English Garden Tree. The menu consists of dishes such as Dublin Bay prawns; Roast loin of suckling pig with whole grain mustard sauce and crackling; and roast Scottish lobster with garlic butter & chips. The tables are spacious, the wine list is amazing and the experience is just lovely!
