Bombay Dreams built round the tough world of Bollywood - home of the film industry in Bombay with its own brand of the human failings and triumphs from its American counterpart. Bombay Dreams sprang from an idea developed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Shekhar Kapur and has at its core a love story, full of powerful emotion. The desire to achieve, to develop old and new cultures, often opposed to each other, underlaid by the roots of race and religion provides a heady brew for this compelling show. The music is by A R Rahman with lyrics by Don Black, directed by Steve Pimlott. Bombay opened in 2002 and is running as strongly as it started. |

A brilliantly thought-up musical! Even if you weren't thinking of an excuse to live again the carefree days and careless nights of the Abba era, this production would be justification enough. A single mother is preparing for her daughter's wedding, daughter is dreaming of delights to come, but behind it all Mummy's mind is wondering which one of three men it was who fathered her child the night of the Abba concert. The delicate and song-laden confrontation which Mum arranges produces the predictable result and everyone lives happily ever after. The singing is prolific and wonderfully stirring. |
